Champions League Free Streams 2026/27: How Music Profits From Football’s Largest Event

Europe’s most famous melody has never entered a chart. In 1992, Tony Britten composed the Champions League theme at UEFA’s request, basing it on Handel’s 1727 Coronation anthem “Zadok the Priest.” It was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, sung by the Chorus of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and features lyrics in English, French and German.

Every time a match begins, millions hear the piece, whether in person or on television. For musicians and record companies, this tournament represents something more than a sporting contest. This is one of the biggest platforms for European music, and it comes around each year.

Why this event is as much about music as sport

The pre-match program ahead of the final has become a regular part of the calendar. Lenny Kravitz performed at Wembley in 2024, Linkin Park headlined in Munich in 2025, and The Killers played prior to the 2026 final in Budapest. Their viewership exceeds the size of most festival crowds.

And there is a sync market that many indie artists fail to recognize. Sport requires music continuously. Arenas use entrance and goal songs, networks use music for recap shows and promos, leagues and teams produce weekly content, and video games feature licensed soundtracks. All of these are sync deals that provide exposure and income.

Before pursuing a sync opportunity in sport, do these things

First, make sure your compositions are properly registered with your performing rights organization and that the information in your delivery is correct. Sync editors are on tight deadlines, and poorly identified tracks don’t make it onto lists.

Second, provide an instrumental and a version without vocals for every new track; the full-length album version is not what is usually requested for air.

Third, have 15-, 30- and 60-second edits prepared before the session begins, as those are the lengths broadcasters require.

The same preparation helps in non-sport opportunities. Broadcasters want clean metadata and an edited version before they add a song to rotation, which means U.S. internet radio stations are quicker to accept tracks from artists who already have a clean edit ready than from those who still need to create one.

Paid promotion can expedite the process, but the platforms worth paying for connect to actual radio stations and offer spin counts you can independently confirm, not figures no one can validate.

Season 2026/27: how the games air in the U.S.

Paramount+ is the sole English-language rights holder in the U.S. and broadcasts every game, per its six-year contract with UEFA through the 2029/30 season. A few select games are also shown on CBS and CBS Sports Network. Spanish-language rights belong to TelevisaUnivision, which airs the matches on Univision, UniMás and TUDN over the air and via ViX online, and its contract expires at the end of the 2026/27 season.

There’s more free access than most realize

CBS’ television matches are free over the air with an antenna, and the Univision lineup is similarly free to air. On Pluto TV, CBS Sports Golazo Network offers select matches for free via an ad-supported soccer channel. On ViX, some matches are available for free, but others require a ViX Premium subscription. The base version of Paramount+ is priced at $8.99 per month and offers a seven-day free trial; if you sign up right before the start of a matchweek, you won’t miss out on any games.

In most European countries, matches are broadcast for free on local television channels. One broadcaster even shows the entire Champions League season. This market-based licensing means that the same matches shown for free in one European country are blocked in another. Cybernews maintains a list of all the countries where the Champions League is shown for free and where it is possible to stream for free.

European tours for US artists face a similar issue. As soon as you step foot in Europe, your Paramount+ app recognizes your location from your IP address and blocks any content not licensed for that region. This is especially true for live sports, which are sold by country instead of by continent.

The EU’s portability rules won’t help you out either. They only apply to consumers who are temporarily travelling within the EU but who live in an EU country. Subscriptions purchased in the US aren’t included. Neither are free subscriptions or accounts in non-EU countries like the UK, Switzerland and Norway.

With a virtual private network, you can watch anything by connecting to a server in your home country. While using a VPN is perfectly legal, it’s in a legal grey area to use it to circumvent regional licensing agreements and is almost certainly a violation of the service’s terms of use. Pirate streaming sites should be avoided at all costs.

In April 2026, the Cologne Regional Court in Germany issued an injunction blocking the largest German-language pirate site, at the request of the DFL and DAZN. If you make money from copyrighted content, you should be consistent in how you treat that content. The same goes for unlicensed music streams.

Dates for the calendar

The first round kicks off on 8 September 2026. The league phase consists of eight matchdays over Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The knockout phase begins in February 2027, with the round of 16 taking place in March. The Champions League final, along with its Kick Off Show, takes place on 5 June 2027 at the Metropolitano stadium in Madrid.

If you’re launching something around one of these key dates, consider the scheduling implications. Match times are usually in the early- to mid-afternoon in the US Eastern Time zone, meaning they’ll take place during prime evening hours in Europe.

For that reason, Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the league phase are less-than-ideal times to promote new releases or ads on social media platforms, since a significant portion of your audience will be watching football instead. You can easily shift a release by a day, which gives your campaign a better shot at getting traction.

FAQ

Can I watch a league-phase match on free US television?
A few. Most matches stream on Paramount+, CBS shows a small number free over the air, and CBS Sports Golazo Network on Pluto TV carries selected fixtures at no cost.

Does my subscription work when I tour in Europe?
For live sport, usually not. A US subscription is not covered by the EU portability rules, which apply to people resident in an EU member state, and sports rights are blocked market by market even within the EU

Where can I watch the Kick Off Show?
It is part of the final broadcast, so it comes with whichever feed carries the final. UEFA and the sponsor put clips on their own channels afterwards.
