The Stern Grove Festival has been taking place free in San Francisco since 1939 and this summer it will run every Sunday from June 14 to August 16 at the Sigmund Stern Grove Recreation Area in the city's Sunset District. Along with artists Al Green, Public Enemy, and Patti LaBelle, the festival this year features a mix of new and familiar artists including Japanese Breakfast and Major Lazer. Concerts begin at 2 p.m. The festival takes place on a large meadow in a grove of eucalyptus trees. The only downside is that the popular free event has limited capacity due to its lotteried ticketing system. If there's ever a time you can catch live music for a low, low price, it will be this summer at Stern Grove.
Electric Forest, June 25-28, Rothbury, Mich.
Electric Forest combines music and visual art installations — and also camping — has moved up from the typical July schedule to take place over the last weekend of June. The 2026 bill at this year's Electric Forest festival, taking place on the grounds of Double JJ Resort, has more than 100 artists, including headlining dance and bass artists including ILLENIUM, Excision, Kaskade, and GRiZ (who will play two sets). Camping is highly encouraged, and while Electric Forest is a destination weekend where you'll want to plan for a longer trip, those who prefer dance music and don't have to worry about getting back to work come Monday morning should be prepared to make it a full-fledged festival experience.

Waterfront Blues Festival, July 3-5, Portland, Ore.
During the Fourth of July weekend in July, the Waterfront Blues Festival turns Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park on the Willamette River into a three-day blues extravaganza (July 2–4). As it turns 39, the 2026 lineup will span three stages and feature three days of action (doors open noontime, music kicks off at 1pm). It’s also still a charity show in Portland, more than a stop for touring shows: the bill features blues/soul/roots acts as the foundation, and with it happening on the riverfront, it’s an easy day pass to check out while in the Pacific Northwest.
HOT 97 Summer Jam changes venues for 2026
2026 is a new year, which means the venue is different for Hot 97 Summer Jam. For the first time, this radio station-curated hip-hop extravaganza will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on July 24, instead of MetLife Stadium (where it’s recently been held). This summer’s bill includes Rick Ross, Ice Spice, DaBaby, French Montana and, via a homecoming show, New Jersey’s own Fetty Wap (more acts will join in as the date grows closer). It’s the New York metro area hip-hop and R&B fans’ summer headline event, but keep in mind that this year the festival’s held at an indoor arena, not a stadium.
Mile of Music turns Appleton into a discovery festival
The Wisconsin city of Appleton is the setting for an incredibly unique festival, Mile of Music, July 30–August 2. This free event features 200 original music artists playing in 35 downtown venues and completely discards the usual headliner concept. The goal is discovery: to provide a setting for artists who write their own songs to play, in venues located near each other (bars, theatres, storefronts, etc.) across the downtown area. It’s also one of a small number of events in this list accepting direct artist submissions through its website — it is more showcase, less consumer event.
Just Like Heaven brings indie nostalgia to Pasadena
If your favorite songs come from 2010 or earlier, Just Like Heaven is the 1-day festival for you. Returning August 22 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, Just Like ’98 has The Strokes and LCD Soundsystem at the top of its bill of 2000s and 2010s indie bands, which also includes Feist, Chromeo, TV Girl and Twin Peaks. Again, this festival is 1-day at the Rose Bowl, which makes it an easy Los Angeles weekend festival for indie-nostalgia fans, and doesn’t involve any camping.
Global Citizen closes the season in Central Park
The last big date to hit up on our 2026 list is the Global Citizen Festival, taking place in New York’s Central Park on September 26 on the Great Lawn. Its format differs from the others: rather than a paid ticket, attendees must acquire their ticket by taking action(s) on Global Citizen’s website, and the event is tied to a global-anti-poverty campaign. It's mostly the heavy hitters who get added later in the game. If you're a New Yorker hoping to land a cause-friendly show in the city and you're cool with playing the points game, you can start registering now. But if you're eyeing the California coast for summer fun, wait and confirm before making your plans!
Shaky Knees brings a rock weekend to Atlanta, September 18–20
Atlanta hosts Shaky Knees on September 18–20 at Piedmont Park, and it is the rock fan’s pick of the season. More than 60 bands play across the weekend, with 2026 headliners Twenty One Pilots, The Strokes, and Gorillaz leading a deep alternative bill that runs through Turnstile, Wu-Tang Clan, Modest Mouse, and Jimmy Eat World. The in-city park setting keeps it walkable and hotel-friendly, with no camping required. For guitar music across indie, punk, and alt-rock, this is the Southeast’s biggest festival and a strong late-season counterpart to the indie crowd at Just Like Heaven.
Bourbon & Beyond. Roots, rock, and Kentucky pours
Bourbon & Beyond is a roots-and-rock lineup with bourbon tastings, in one city at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville Sept. 24–27. The 2026 lineup has headliners spanning four days and five stages, including Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age on the rock side; Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, and Jason Isbell on the country and Americana side; and Mumford & Sons and Dave Matthews Band. Bourbon & Beyond is a true music-and-food-and-whiskey event, and not a concert festival that serves food at a few tents. If you’re into roots and classic-rock music, it’s the best option in late-September.
